SDSU Extension will host a workshop on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, from 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. at the Ramkota Hotel (920 W Sioux Ave, Pierre, SD 57501). The workshop, led by renowned farm family coach and speaker Elaine Froese, is designed to help farm and ranch families and agricultural professionals address the often unspoken but critical conversations that shape the future of their farms and ranches. Through interactive exercises and practical advice, participants will learn how to effectively communicate about sensitive topics and manage conflict in a constructive way.
Registration:
The cost to attend this workshop is $175, which covers up to four family members and includes lunch and all workshop materials. The cost for each additional family member is $30. - 9:30 a.m. – Registration and check-in
- 10:00 a.m. – Session 1: Discuss the Undiscussabull – Elaine will guide participants through strategies for initiating and navigating challenging conversations that are often avoided in farm families. From succession planning to financial concerns and family dynamics, this session will help break down the barriers to discussing the “undiscussable” issues. Through real-life examples and role-playing activities, participants will gain confidence in addressing these difficult topics.

- 1:30 p.m. – Session 2: Conflict Dynamics – In the afternoon session, Elaine will dive into the dynamics of conflict within farm families and teams. Participants will explore the root causes of conflict, learn about different conflict styles, and discover how to turn disagreements into opportunities for growth and problem-solving. The session will include interactive exercises that allow participants to identify their own conflict style and practice strategies for resolving disputes.
